Tour Description

“Over Hill and Dale” is the name chosen for the OSU Extension Service Master Gardener program 2011 Garden Tour. This years’ Garden Tour is produced by the Central Gorge Master Gardener Association and will showcase seven diverse gardens in the Hood River Valley. Each garden was selected due to its’ own distinguishing features and contrast to the other gardens that will be shown. A wide variety of plants, water features, vegetable gardens and spectacular views will be available for you to enjoy at your leisure on Saturday, June 18 from 10 AM to 4 PM. This is a self guided tour where you are encouraged start at any garden on the tour, visit as many gardens as you wish and go at your own pace. OSU Master Gardeners will be at each garden to offer plant identification and information. Artists will also be showcasing their work at many of the gardens on the tour.

The seven gardens featured on the OSU Master Gardener Garden Tour include three neighboring gardens in Stonegate, on Parsons Road in Hood River. Each of these neighboring gardens are designed for easy outdoor living, yet each has its’ own unique style.

Al and Nancy Brown at 667 Parsons Rd., have propagated most of the plants in their garden from individual ‘mother’ plants. Their plantings are complimented by an oriental arch and beautiful rockwork at the front of the house.

The entrance to the garden of Jodi and Gary Goatcher at 672 Parsons Rd. is somewhat formal and modernistic while the backyard combines friendly open spaces with cozy intimate areas. A bright blue garden shed adds whimsy to the shaded backyard space and provides Goatcher with a place to retreat and relax.

Also in the Stonegate neighborhood is the garden of Louise and Joe McCulloch at 671 Parsons Rd where she has developed areas of both sun and shade. McCulloch’s property is next to a common area so she has strategically placed significant berms with mature plantings that offer a feeling of privacy while taking advantage of the open space nearby.

Sakura Ridge, owned by John & Deanna Joyer, is located at 5601 York Hill Rd in Hood River. The Joyer home is a working Bed & Breakfast set on the edge of an orchard with a spectacular view of Mt. Hood. The landscape was designed by Marion McNew and features a large table garden, impressive rock work, raised beds and both formal and informal plantings.

The garden of Karen and Lee Fairchild at 4614 Balwin Creek Rd. in Parkdale, is a large south facing area that blends designs inspired by the homeowners and garden designer Marian McNew. The half acre front area appears almost wild but is actually well thought out and woven with paths and native plantings. Behind the Fairchild home is a vegetable and herb garden and several substantial arch supports.

On the edge of a tree farm in Parkdale sits the sprawling garden of Denise & John Snyder at 5300 Culbertson Drive. Plantings around the Snyder home are a bit formal while the large vegetable garden is surrounded by a whimsical basket woven fence. There are several area outbuildings including an ‘outhouse’, an abandoned farm vehicle and a “Green Beast” that is over 30 foot tall and looks like a dinosaur.

Karen and Dave Louiselles’ garden at 4465 Woodworth Drive, is probably the most intensely planted of all the gardens on the OSU Master Gardener garden tour. Their garden is the result of teamwork between Karen, an experienced gardener and Dave, a talented builder. The wide variety of plants for sun and shade, as well as wonderful water features are a treat for the senses and the soul.

Local artists will also be showing their work in the gardens on the OSU Master Gardener garden tour. Indoor, outdoor, whimsical, functional…a wide variety of art produced by artists local to the Columbia Gorge, will be on display to enhance the experience of what is shaping up to be a wonderful day of garden visits along the Hood River Valley.
